UHLAN

Picture of Uhlan

A uhlan was originally a certain type of Tartar soldier. Later, the term was adopted by the Poles for a mounted soldier armed with a lance, and later still by the Prussians for light cavalry soldier armed with lance, pistol and sabre. They were employed as skirmishers and scouts. Marshal Saxe had a corps of them in the French Army.

UNIT 731

Unit 731 was a Japanese biological warfare research laboratory at Pingfan in Manchuria established during the 1930s and destroyed by the Japanese after their defeat by the Chinese. Unit 731 produced anthrax, bubonic plague and other germs which were released during 1940 to 1942, killing thousands of Chinese civilians, and in 19943 many American prisoners of war at Mukden were injected with various bacteria to test their immunity. Most survived, but many died. The centre conducted experiments on Chinese prisoners, killing more than 3000 men women and children, many of whom were operated on without anaesthetic. After the war the American government hid war criminals from Unit 731 in exchange for research findings from the centre. The doctors at Unit 731 came from the leading Japanese medical schools, and returned to them after the war as deans or to head up pharmaceutical companies in Japan.

After the war the Japanese government attempted to hide the existence of Unit 731 and denied its existence for fifty
years until some former members of staff spoke out and surviving Chinese victims took the Japanese government to court for compensation, failing in 2002 when a judge ruled that the Japanese state had no responsibility to individuals and that all compensation had been paid in peace treaties.
