The Yeoman of The Guard are bodyguards to the British sovereign. They were first appointed by Henry VII in 1485, and now act chiefly as warders at the Tower Of London still wearing the picturesque uniform of the period when they were first appoinred. The officers comprise a captain, usually a peer, a lieutenant, an ensign, a clerk of cheque and adjutant, and four exons. The men are old soldiers, and are armed with partisans and short swords. The Yeomanry were a volunteercavalry force in the British army. They were originally formed in the 18th century for home defence and merged with the Territorial Force in 1907. The members of the Yeomanry had to supply their own horses, but had an allowance for clothing; the government also supplying arms and ammunition. This force formed the nucleus of the Imperial Yeomanry, a body of volunteers raised for service in South Africa, which later formed an integral part of the British military system. Just before they were merged with the Territorial Force they numbered about 35,000. Research Yeomanry
