The Vickers 2-pounder Mark VIII was a British naval anti-aircraft gun of the Second World War. The Mark VIII was essentially a redesign of the previous Mark II to suit an eight barrel mounting with a more robust automatic mechanism. When the Mark VIII entered service in 1930 it was a very advanced weapon, however, by 1939 the rapid advancements in aircraft design meant that its low muzzle velocity and lack of a satisfactory explosive shell made the gun fairly useless. The Vickers 2-pounder Mark VIII fired a 2 lb shell to a range of 3500 meters, or the high-velocity 2 lb shell 4500 meters to a standard anti-aircraft ceiling of 4000 meters at a rate of fire of 115 rounds-per-minute.
