NAPOLEON

Napoleon or Nap is a British trick-taking card game for three or more players which appeared during the 19th century after the Battle of Waterloo, and in which each of which receives five cards each and subsequently bids how many tricks they will take, five tricks being bid is called a 'Napoleon'. The player who bids the highest number of tricks chooses trumps and tries to win at least that many tricks. If a player has bid Napoleon, a subsequent player may bid 'Wellington' which is also to win five tricks, but they bid more money (usually ten units). A player does not have to bid to win any tricks, they may pass instead. If all players pass the cards are returned to the dealer, shuffled and re-dealt. If the bidder wins the number of tricks declared, each other player pays them that number, three if they bid three tricks, four for four and five for Napoleon or ten for Wellington. Alternatively, if the bidder fails to win the declared number of tricks, he pays each other player the same amount as they would have paid him. The game of Napoleon is particularly played in the south-east of England.

NETBALL

Picture of Netball

Netball is a particularly fast and highly skilled seven-a-side ball game played mainly by women. It developed from Basketball after the introduction of basketball into England in 1895, and remains a recognisable variation of the game. The aim of the game is to get the ball in the opposing goal hoop as many times as possible throughout a 60 minute match. The netball court is 100 ft long by 50 ft wide, approximately the size of a tennis court. The court is split by two lines that divide the court into thirds. At both ends of the court there is a shooting semicircle and a ten foot goal post with no back board. Each team member has a specific position that is restricted to an area on the court. These restricted areas have an attacking and defending player in them, each from an opposing team. Some of the main rules are: a) Once the player has caught the ball only two steps may be taken. b) A player can only hold the ball for three seconds. c) A defending player must be three feet away from an attacking player with the ball. d) Only two positions on the court can shoot. e) Shots can only be taken from within the semicircle.

NINE CARD DON

Nine Card Don is a card game and distant relative of All Fours which is played in parts of England and Wales. According to Arthur Taylor's 'Guinness Book of Traditional Pub Games' published in 1992 it is also known as Big Don, Long Don, or Welsh Don. The game is normally played in pubs, where there may be more than four people waiting for a game. In this case, a procedure called 'jacks out' is used to decide which four people will play. Those who wish to take part (5 to 7 people - because if there were 8 you would have two complete tables) each place a stake (typically a pound - maybe 5 pounds) on the table, and the cards are dealt out one at a time, face up to the stakes. When a jack appears, the player who contributed that stake is in the game, and no further cards are dealt to that stake. Where the four jacks eventually land, those are the players. All the stakes, including those of the players who were not selected, form a pool that goes to the eventual winners of the game. Partnerships are then determined by cutting cards. In some pubs, people also bet on whom will be partners.
