ROOK

Rook is the name of a group of games and of the special deck of cards for the game which was introduced by Parker Brothers in 1906. The games are popular in Eastern Kentucky, in the Mennonite communities of Southern Ontario (near Elmira / Waterloo), Manitoba, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and probably also in other parts of North America. The Rook deck contains 57 cards. There are four suits coloured black, red, green and yellow. In each suit the cards are numbered from 1 to 14. The 57th card is the rook card, which carries a picture of the bird. It is likely that Rook cards were introduced for the benefit of members of fundamentalist protestant religions, such as the Mennonites, who considered (and in some cases still consider) playing cards to be the 'devil's tool'. They were forbidden to play cards; but Parker Brothers filled the void with a game that was played like cards but did not use the standard playing card deck. There are people who refuse to play any cards with a standard deck but who will happily play Rook all night every weekend. There is a close parallel here with Kvitlech cards, which were playing cards bearing numbers, made for use by Central European Jews who were also forbidden by their religion to use standard cards. The deck normally comes with a booklet describing a number games which can be played with the cards. The main group of games are point trick games with trumps and bidding. The cards in each suit rank from 14 (high) to 1 (low) and the counting cards are generally the 14 and 10 of each suit (worth 10 points each) and the 5 (worth 5 points). The Rook card, when used, is worth 20, and is generally an extra trump. In some games the 1 is promoted to rank above the 14 and is worth 15 points.

ROQUE

Roque is a form of croquet played in the USA and generally considered to be a more scientific version than the original. The object is to strike balls through iron hoops using a mallet, before hitting the two posts at each end of the court. Along the way it is desirable to try and knock your opponent's balls out of the way.

ROUGE ET NOIR

Rouge et noir (red and black) also known as Trente et Quarante (thirty and forty) is a gambling game played with cards. The game is played on a rectangular table covered with a green cloth, having at either end two large diamonds coloured red and black respectively and a triangular space called inverse. In the centre are two divisions known as couleur.

Six decks of cards are shuffled together, from which the dealer takes a convenient quantity in his hand each time a coup is dealt. Court cards count ten, and the ten down to ace bear their face value. The dealer first deals for noir (black) until the pips on the cards faced in a line number 31 or not more than 40; and then does the same for rouge (red), the winning row being that containing pips totalling the nearest to 31. Should the pips number exactly the same (between 32 and 40) in both noir and rouge, the deal is void. In the event of both rows totalling exactly 31 each, half the stakes go to the bank, or the players have the option of leaving their entire stakes down for the next deal, the successful ones receiving their stakes back, but without any profit. In the case of the losers the bank takes all. This is called the refait, and acts in favour of the bank in the same manner as zero does in roulette.

Players who stake on couleur wager that the winning colour will be the same as the first card turned; those backing inverse, that it will be the opposite. Stakes placed on the red or black diamond denote the backing of that particular colour to win. The dealer holds the bank, and the other players are termed punters.

ROUND THE ISLAND RACE

The Round the Island Race is an annual yacht race held in June, and taking place around the Isle of Wight. The Round the Island Race operates a handicap system (most boats being measured and allocated a time allowance based upon their size), enabling different classes of boats to compete against each other, thereby enabling an individual boat to win its own class and despite finishing in a slower time than a boat from a faster time, achieving a higher position than the faster boat through the handicap system.

The Round the Island Race has been organised since 1931 by the Island Sailing Club - the first race involved 25 boats, the 2009 race over 1500 boats. The race starts at West Cowes, the boats racing westwards (anti-clockwise) around the Isle of Wight, keeping as close inshore as they dare, before crossing the finishing line at East Cowes about 55 nautical miles and some hours later, the winning crew receiving the Gold Roman Bowl prize.

The classes of boats include: IRC rated boats, Non-IRC rated monohull boats (racing under ISC Rating System), Classic Racing Yachts (racing under ISC Rating System), Sportsboat Rule, Original and Modern Gaffers, Multihulls (Grand Prix and MOCRA Racing Classes), and Bridgedeck Catamaran Cruisers.

ROUNDERS

Rounders is a game played by two teams, with a semicircular ''home'' and three ''posts'' equidistant from each other and from the home. The object of the striker after hitting the ball is to run round the whole or part of the course. He is out if a fielder catches the ball or if he is struck by the ball when running between the posts. The American game of baseball derived from rounders.
