WAISTCOAT

A waistcoat (also known as a vest) was originally a man's sleeveless, button-up garment reaching to the knees or hips and worn beneath a coat. In 18th century etiquette, the waistcoat was worn unbuttoned, allowing the right hand to be inserted while standing - rather than allowing the arms to dangle at the sides like a servant or the hands pushed into trouser pockets. Today the waistcoat is a close fitting, sleeveless, collarless, usually button-up garment worn by men over a shirt, but under a jacket.

A Watteau hat is a woman's, straw or felt hat without a brim or crown, resembling a flat piece of stiffened material. They are usually decorated with ostrich plumes and ribbons and are held in place with a hat pin.

WIMPLE

A wimple is a covering of silk or linen for the neck, chin and the sides of the face, usually worn out of doors, and usually held in place by some form of head band. Wimples were formerly worn in the Middle Ages by women, and are still worn by some nuns today.

The windcheater is a waist-length jacket with a fitted waistband adapted from the British RAF flying jacket of the 1940s and 1950s. They are made from wool, gabardine, or nylon, are usually waterproof and have buttons or a zip from the waist to the neck.
