An anchor is an implement for holding a ship or other vessel at rest in the water. In ancient times large stones or crooked pieces of wood heavily weighted with metal were used for this purpose. The anchor later used was of iron, formed with a strong shank, at one extremity of which is the crown, from which branch out two arms, terminating in broad palms or flukes, the sharp extremity of which is the peak or bill; at the other end of the shank is the stock (fixed at right angles to the plane of the arms), behind which is the ring, to which a cable can be attached. The principal use of the stock is to cause the arms to fall so as one of the flukes shall enter the ground. The anchors of the largest size carried by men-of-war were called the best and small bowers, the sheet, and the spare, to which are added the stream and the kedge, which were used for anchoring in a stream or other sheltered place and for warping the vessel from one place to another. Many improvements and novelties in the shape and construction of anchors were introduced around the 18th and 19th centuries. The principal names connected with those alterations are those of Lieutenant Rodgers, who introduced the hollow-shanked anchor with the view of increasing the strength without adding to the weight; Mr. Porter, who made the arms and flukes movable by pivoting them to the stock instead of fixing them immovably, causing the anchor to take a readier and firmer hold, and avoiding the chance of the cable becoming foul; Mr. Trotman, who further improved on Porter's invention; and M Martin, whose anchor is of very peculiar form, and is constructed so as to be self-canting, the arms revolving through an angle of 30" either way, and the sharp points of the flukes being always ready to enter the ground.

Armada is the Spanish name for any large naval force. In English the term is usually applied to the Spanish fleet vaingloriously designated the Invincible Armada, intended to act against England in 1588. The Invincible Armada (popularly known as the Spanish Armada) was collected and equipped by Philip II, king of Spain, for the subjugation of England. It consisted of 130 ships, 3165 cannon, 8050 sailors, 2088 galley-slaves, 18,972 soldiers, 1382 volunteers and 150 monks the whole under the command of the duke of Medina Sidonia. The Armada sailed from Lisbon on the 19th May 1588 and was soon after dispersed by a storm, it recollected, was refitted at Corunna and sailed into the channel off Cornwall on the 19th of July 1588. It was to co-operate with a land force collected in Flanders under the Prince of Parma, and to unite with this it proceeded through the English Channel towards Calais. In its progress it was attacked by the English fleet under Lord Howard, who, with his lieutenants, Drake, Hawkins, and Frobisher, endeavoured by dexterous seamanship and the discharge of well-directed volleys of shot to destroy or capture the vessels of the enemy.
The great lumbering Spanish vessels suffered severely from their smaller opponents, which most of their shot missed. Arrived at length off Dunkirk, the armada was becalmed, thrown into confusion by fire-ships, and many of the Spanish vessels destroyed or taken. The Duke of Medina Sidonia, owing to the severe losses, at last resolved to abandon the enterprise, and conceived the idea of reconveying his fleet to Spain by a voyage round the north of Great Britain; but storm after storm assailed his ships, scattering them in all directions, and sinking many. Some went down on the cliffs of Norway, others in the open sea, others on the Scottish coast, others on the coast of Ireland. In all, seventy-two large vessels and over 10,000 men were lost.

The Aviere is an Italian Lupo (Artigliere) class frigate of 2200 tons displacement initially built for Iraq but the delivery was cancelled following the United Nations embargoes against Iraq in 1990. Consequently new weapons and communications systems were fitted to meet the requirements of the Italian Navy. The Lupo class Fleet Patrol is one of a range of Fincantieri light advanced frigates capable of carrying out co-operative missions in the escort and support role and multi-role missions including surveillance and patrol, interdiction, strike and training. The Fleet Patrol Ship incorporates low infrared signature, reliability and maintainability in the design. The ship has a complement of 185 crew including 15 officers, however an extra 20 crew can be accommodated.
The ship's surface to surface missile system is the Otomat. The missile system has eight Otomat Teseo Mark 2 missile launchers. Two pairs of launchers are installed on both sides of the ship, at an elevation angle of about 11 degrees and aiming in the forward direction. For air defence, the ship is fitted with the Albatros medium range surface-to-air missile system. This consists of one eight-cell launcher which fires the Aspide missile. The ship's main gun installed on the bow deck is the Otobreda 127 mm gun which fires 32 kg rounds at a sustained rate of 45 rounds per minute. The range of the gun is more than 15 kilometres against surface targets and 7 kilometres against airborne targets. The two Otobreda 40 mm twin anti-aircraft guns are installed on the port and starboard side of the ship at the main deck level between the helicopter deck and the surface to surface missile launchers. The anti-aircraft guns fire 0.96 kg shells at a firing rate of 300 rounds per minute to a range of 4 km for airborne targets and to 12 kilometres for surface targets. The weapons control system for the 40 mm guns consists of two Dardo systems from Alenia Elsag Sistemi Navale (AESN). The ship is equipped with two ILAS 3 triple torpedo launchers firing the A244/S torpedo. The ship has a helicopter deck at the stern has a single landing spot for an Agusta AB212ASW helicopter. The Lupo class ships are equipped with a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion system. The Fiat/GE LM 2500 gas turbine engines provide a sustained power level of 50,000 horsepower. Two GMT BL 230.20 M diesel engines provide 10,000 horsepower. The engines drive two shafts with controlled pitch propellers. The turbine engines provide a maximum speed of 36 knots and the diesel engines provide a lower maximum speed of 20 knots. At the diesel engines economical speed of 16 knots, the range of the patrol ship is 4,250 miles.
