ESSEX

The USS Essex was an American frigate of thirty-two guns which saw action during the War of 1812. The USS Essex, under Captain Porter, was attacked on August the 13th, 1812, by the Alert, a twenty-gun sloop-of-war. One broadside from the Essex nearly sunk the Alert, and caused its surrender. Late in the year the Essex started on an independent cruise in the Pacific. Here it did noble service to the American cause. It captured nearly every British whaling vessel off the west coast of South America. In February, 1814, it was surprised while in the port of Valparaiso by the appearance of two British men-of-war, the Phoebe, thirty-six guns, and the Cherub, twenty-two guns. On March the 28th, 1814, the USS Essex set sail for the open sea, and was at once attacked by the British. It was a desperate and bloody battle. After two-thirds of its men had been killed or disabled, including every officer but one, and with his vessel a helpless wreck, Captain Porter surrendered.

ETNA

The Etna A5326 is an Italian naval replenishment and logistic support ship. The purpose of the Etna is to fully support the long range missions of a naval squadron which would typically include an aircraft carrier and the carrier's complete escort. The logistic support vessel has to be in position to refuel the squadron, including the air wing of the carrier, and also provide full logistic support in terms of repair workshops, spare parts, ammunition replenishment and supplies. To fulfil these operational requirements the ship has high sustained speed, a sufficient cargo and transport capacity and a number of specialised workshops providing technical assistance for offshore repairs. The Etna is also capable of performing civil protection roles at times of crisis. The ship has high autonomous capacity to provide electrical power, fresh water and prepared meals and also has fully equipped hospital and medical facilities on board. The ship can also be fitted with the equipment to control and combat heavy sea pollution.
The ship is manned by a total of 130 crew members based on a three shift operation. The 130 crew members include the ship's helicopter wing, personnel for Replenishment at Sea and Fuelling at Sea (RAS/FAS) operations, ship's maintenance and medical care staff. The Etna is fitted with a single spot flight deck, measuring 28 x 16 metres, fitted for deck handling and deck anchorage of a helicopter such as the EH101 Merlin or the Agusta AB212ASW. The flight deck is equipped for night operations. The hangar is large enough to accommodate an EH-101 size helicopter or alternatively the hangar can be used to store four 20 ft standard containers. The helicopter facilities include a maintenance workshop, a flight briefing room and the flight deck officer's station (FDO). The helicopter facilities give the ship the capability to re-supply warships in the task force by vertical replenishment (VERTREP). VERTREP uses helicopters to ferry supplies or men from ship to ship and is used to re-supply a ship which does not need to take fuel on board. VERTREP is also used to speed up the replenishment operation of a ship connected to one of the Replenishment At Sea (RAS) rigs. The Etna is armed with a 76 mm 62 calibre main gun for defence during operations in war zones. The propulsion system provides the Etna with a continuous speed of 21 knots at full load displacement, allowing the ship to provide reliable logistic support to the naval group and also the capability of fast intervention in the case of rescue and humanitarian operations for disaster relief. The range at an economical speed of 18 knots is 7,600 nautical miles.

EXOCET MM40

The Exocet MM40 is the ship-launched long-range version of the Exocet family of anti-ship missiles, with the same general characteristics and the same reliability. The MM40 possesses a great enemy defence penetration capability and the fact that several missiles can be fired in a salvo while others are kept in reserve (thanks to the small-diameter cylindrical launcher-container). The Exocet MM40 has an over-the-horizon capability, used if necessary, in conjunction with a discreet target indicating airborne relay, usually a helicopter with the system retaining its 'fire and forget' characteristics throughout. The Exocet MM40 is powered by two solid-propellant rockets (booster and sustainer) and steered by aerodynamic control surfaces, and flies just above sea level to a range of over 70 km.

EXOCET SM39

The Exocet SM39 is a French submarine launched anti-ship missile by Aerospatiale. The missile is equipped with a steel cased Tristan solid propellant rocket motor and a Narval booster motor. The target range and bearing data is downloaded from the submarine's tactical data system and weapon control system into the Exocet's computer. The SM39 in a launch capsule is launched from the submarine's torpedo tubes and the launch capsule is propelled away from the submarine and clear of the surface of the sea by a solid propellant motor. The missile separates from the capsule and the boost motor is ignited. The missile approaches the target area in sea skimming mode using inertial navigation and then active radar homing. The missile approaches the target at speeds over Mach 0.9 and the range is 50 kilometres. The Exocet's 165 kg high explosive shaped charge warhead is armed with a delayed impact and a proximity fuse.
