SAIL

A sail is a piece of cloth or tissue of some kind spread to the wind to impel or assist in impelling a vessel through the water. Sails are usually made of several breadths of canvas, sewed together with a double seam at the borders, and edged all round with a cord or cords called the bolt-rope or bolt-ropes. A sail extended by a yard hung by the middle is called a square sail; a sail set upon a gaff, boom, or stay, so as always to hang more or less in the direction of the vessel's length, is called a fore-and-aft sail. The upper part of every sail is the head, the lower part the foot, the sides in general are called leeches. The lower two corners of a square sail are in general called clues, and are kept extended by ropes called sheets. Sails generally take their names, partly at least, from the mast, yard, or stay upon which they are stretched; thus, the main-course, main-top sail, main-topgallant sail, are respectively the sails on the mainmast main-topmast, and main-topgallant mast.

Some other sails are flying jib; jib; fore-topmast staysail; fore-course (or fore-sail); fore-topsail; fore-topgallant sail; fore-royal; fore-sky-sail; fore-royal studding-sail; fore-topgallant studding-sail; fore-topmast studding-sail; main-course (main-sail); main-top sail; main-topgallant sail; main-royal; main-sky-sail; main-royal studding-sail; main-topgallant studding-sail; main-topmast studding-sail; mizzen-course (cross-jack); mizzen-top-sail; mizzen-topgallant sail; mizzen-royal; mizzen-sky-sail; spanker or driver.

SCHOONER

A schooner is a sailing vessel with two (sometimes with more) masts, fore- and aft-rigged, whose main and fore sails are extended by gaffs and stretched out below by booms. Small schooners seldom had a boom for the foresail. There were traditionally two chief types, the top-sail schooner and the fore-and-aft schooner, the former carrying a square top-sail and top-gallant sail (with sometimes a royal) on the fore-mast, and the latter having fore-and-aft sails alone, or sometimes a square sail on the fore-mast. The first schooner is said to have been launched at Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1713. A 'jackass schooner' had three masts, the fore-mast like that of a top-sail schooner.

SCREW-PROPELLER

A screw-propeller is an instrument for the propulsion of a vessel consisting of two or more oblique blades set on a shaft or shafts lying nearly parallel with the keel, and revolving beneath the water at the stern.
The Chinese used screw-propellers from a very early date for making vessels move. Various devices for applying the system were put forward from time to time by Du Quet in 1731, Bourguer in 1746, Daniel Bernoulli in 1752 and Emerson in 1754. The Archimedean screw was tried by Pancton in 1768, and as used by him, consisted of a revolving cylinder of some length, with the thread of a screw round it. In 1784 a more definite advance was made by Joseph Bramah, a London engineer, who invented a wheel furnished with inclined fans or wings. This was attached to a shaft which entered the ship's stern, and was made to revolve from inside. In 1787 Fitch experimented with a screw steamer on the Delaware River in the United States. In 1799 Dr Shorter obtained a patent for a 'perpetual sculling machine' which consisted of a screw immersed in the water at the vessel's stern, and worked by hand. A successful trial of this was made in 1800.

SEGURA

The Segura is a Spanish Segura class mine hunter launched in 1997. The main mission of the ship is the clearance of mines in the entrance to ports, naval bases and coastal sea lanes. Mines are cleared to a depth of 200 metres for bottom mines and 300 metres for moored mines. A secondary mission is to guide other shipping through the channels which have been cleared in the minefields. Segura mine hunters are able to withstand the shock of underwater explosions through the use of glass fibre reinforced plastic for the hull and superstructure and the selection of shock resistant equipment and systems. The hull is constructed with a single skin of GRP with longitudinal stiffeners in the base and traverse frames along the sides. The construction provides a very light and strong structure able to withstand high sealoads and high shock loads produced by underwater explosions. A skin of vinylester resin is used on the outer layer to provide a barrier against the ingress of water. The accommodation for 40 crew is in the midship area. The operating rooms, comprising the Command and Information Centre (CIC), radio room, sonar room and the sonar winch room are grouped on the main deck in the forward part of the superstructure just under the bridge. The machinery spaces comprising the main engine room, auxiliary machinery room and the diesel generator room are located between main watertight bulkheads in the stern. The diesel generator room is located on the main deck in order to minimise noise below the waterline.
The remotely operated mine disposal vehicle (ROV) launch and recovery area is on the afterdeck which is equipped with two cranes. A closed hangar provides storage and maintenance facilities for the ROVs and support facilities for divers, including two rigid inflatable boats fitted with silent outboards and a decompression chamber. The ship has two propulsion modes with a diesel engine for cruising and an electric engine for silent propulsion during mine-hunting operations. The ship is fitted with two independent Voith Schneider 18GH cycloidal propellers and twin tube bow thrusters which provide exceptional manoeuvrability. The Voith Schneider propellers provide propulsion and steering in cruising and mine hunting modes. The propellers are powered by independent power plants, each of which includes a diesel engine for transit and an electric motor for silent slow speed running whilst mine hunting. Each power plant is installed on a rigid sub-base which is mounted on the hull with vibration isolation rubber mounts. The two BAZAN-MTU 6V 396 diesel engines are rated at 560 kW each for cruising propulsion. The two low magnetic field electric motors feature compensated stray fields and are each rated at 125 kW for mine hunting.

SHIP

A ship is a vessel intended for navigating the ocean, as distinct from a boat which is any vessel navigable on water. The term ship now applies to sizeable boats which are intended for distant voyages, and with the advent of flight the term is also applied to some vehicles which float in the air (air-ships) and some which fly through space (space ships).

Ships are of various sizes, and fitted for various uses, and receive various names, sailing ships according to their rig and the purposes to which they are applied, as man-of-war ships, transports, merchantmen, barques, brigs, schooners, luggers, sloops, xebecs, galleys, etc. The name as descriptive of a particular rig, and as roughly implying a certain size, was used to designate a vessel furnished with a bowsprit and three or four masts, each of which is composed of a lower-mast, a top-mast, and a top-gallant mast, and carrying a certain number of square sails on each of the masts. These masts are named, beginning with the foremost, the fore, the main, and mizzen masts; and when there is a fourth it is called the jigger-mast. The principal sails are named according to the masts to which they belong. Owing to the increase of size and the development of steam navigation the restricted application of the term ship became of little value.

There were two primitive types of shipbuilding from one or other of which, or rather perhaps from a joint development of both, all the improvements of modern times have proceeded. These were the raft and the canoe: the one, formed by fixing together planks and spars, gave a floating surface strong and buoyant enough to support a cargo; the other, made by hollowing out the body of a tree and sharpening the ends, gave with little constructive art the crude model of a form fitted for navigation. In like manner there have been from time immemorial two distinct modes of propulsion, by oars and sails.

The ancient art of ship-building, like many other arts, was lost in the overwhelming tide of barbarism which overthrew the last of the great empires of antiquity. The cruder nations of Europe had to begin again in great measure on their own resources. The war galley of the ancients may possibly be so far preserved in the mediaeval galleys applied to the same purpose. On the Mediterranean, too, an unbroken line of coasting ships may probably have continued to sail. But it appears evident that the progress made in shipbuilding under the Roman Empire, not to speak of the Phoenicians and other earlier navigators, was much greater than was transmitted to mediaeval Europe. Shipbuilding made little progress in Europe until the discovery of the compass, which was introduced in a crude form in the 12th century, and had been improved and had come into common use in the 14th century. The opening up of the passage to India and the discovery of America by Europeans made another epoch in its progress. In the building of large vessels the Spaniards long took the lead, and were followed by the French, who specially distinguished themselves in the theoretical study of the art.

In the early progress of the art of ship-building the English took little or no part. When Henry VII built the Henry Grace de Dieu, which is regarded as the parent of the British navy, the English were greatly inferior to the nations of Southern Europe both in navigation and in ship-building. In the reign of Elizabeth I the English fleet proved its superiority to that of Spain in respect of fighting capacity, but it was afterwards rivalled by that of Holland. rapid improvement was made in ship-building during the 17th and 18th centuries in England as well as the maritime states of the Continent. The first three-decker was built in England in 1637. She was called the Sovereign of the Seas, and was deemed the best man-of-war in the world. In 1768 the French adopted three-deckers; and from their application of science they acquired a decided superiority in the size and models of their ships over the English. In the early part of the 19th century the lead in improvement was taken by the United States. English builders were at first sceptical as to American improvements; but in 1832 Scott Russell theoretically established the principles on which speed in sailing depends - principles which had already been practically applied not only by the Americans but by the Spaniards. From the time of their theoretical establishment they were rapidly adopted in England, and a race of improvement began between Great Britain and America. The true principles of construction both in build and rig were exemplified in the celebrated Baltimore clipper schooners, which were sharp in the bow, deep in the stern, of great length, and lying low in the water, with long, slender masts, and large sails cut with great skill. The same principles were afterwards applied to square-rigged vessels, and produced the English and American clipper ships which did so much to develop the trade of India, China, and Australia with both Europe and America.

A great change came over the art of ship-building when steam was introduced and wood gave place to iron and then to steel. The first steamer built expressly for regular voyages between Europe and America was the Great Western, launched in 1837. She was propelled by paddles, but about the same time the screw-propeller was invented, which was soon adopted in sea-going ships, and the British Admiralty possessed a screw steamer in 1842. Iron vessels were built early in the 19th century for canal service, then for river service, and later for packet service on the coasts. About 1838 iron vessels were built for ocean service, but the first ocean-going steamship in its modern form, built of iron and propelled by the screw, was the Great Britain, launched in 1842. Compound engines (first introduced by Messrs. Randolph, Elder, and Co. of Glasgow, in 1854), with high-pressure steam, were not used in the Royal Navy until 1867 (in the Sirius). And so the progress of steam navigation was marked by special types of vessels built from time to time. The use of iron and steel in the construction of ships made Britain, where there was such an unlimited supply of iron, and such skill in working it, the home of ship-building. This industry formerly had its seat at the ports where suitable timber was most accessible, but was later to be found chiefly at those where the coal and the iron were near. Thus the Clyde, the Tyne, and the Wear have became the principal centres of ship-building. Iron replaced wood in ship building because an iron vessel is lighter than a wooden one of the same size, and with iron the same strength may be obtained with less weight. Iron is also far more manageable than wood, as it can be bent with ease into any required shape. Steel, which superseded iron for building ships, is a still lighter material and is equally manageable.

In wooden ships the keel forms the base of the whole structure; from it rise on either side a large number of ribs, consisting of strong timbers usually built up of several pieces, and having the requisite curvature according to the shape of the vessel; to the ribs are attached by bolts or wooden pins the planks that form the outer skin or covering, the interstices between the planks being made water-tight by caulking; internally beams extend from side to side to support the deck or decks. In steel or iron ships the keel is of far less importance than in wooden ships, and does not as in them hold the position of foundation or 'back-bone' to the whole structure, since an iron vessel ought to be mutually supporting throughout. The keel is constructed of plates riveted together, and sometimes is made hollow. From it, and riveted to it on either side, rise the ribs, which are girders built up of plates, and to the ribs on the outside is fastened the plating. The plating consists of sheets of iron-plate overlapping each other at the edges, where they are riveted together. There may be an inner skin of plating as well as an outer. The ribs are tied together and at the same time held apart by beams of iron, which support the deck or decks.

SHRIKE

The USS Shrike is an American Osprey Class mine hunter. The Osprey Class ships are the world's largest glass reinforced plastic (GRP) ships and are the first United States Navy ships designed solely for mine hunting. The technique used to locate mines is by high definition sonar and the mines are neutralised with a remotely controlled underwater vehicle. The platform has been designed with exceptionally low magnetic and acoustic signatures to protect against mine detonations during mine hunting operations. The ship has two Isotta Franschini ID 36 SS 8V AM diesel engines which provide 1600 hp and drive two Voith Schneider cycloidal propellers for increased manoeuvrability. The non magnetic diesel engines are similar to those used in the US Navy's Avenger Class Mine Countermeasures Vessels. The three diesel generators are Isotta Franschini ID 36. The machinery is acoustically isolated and suspended from the main deck in glass reinforced plastic cradles. When an undersea explosion occurs the isolated machinery remains unaffected. For defence, the ship has two 12.7 mm machine-guns.
