TACK

The name tack is given to a rope employed to pull the lower corner of a studding sail to the boom and to the part of a sail to which the tack is usually fastened; the foremost lower corner of fore-and-aft sails, as of schooners.

In nautical terms, tack refers to the direction of a vessel in regard to the trim of her sails; as, the starboard tack, or port tack; the former when she is close-hauled with the wind on her starboard side; hence, the run of a vessel on one tack.

In sailing, tack means to change the direction of a vessel when sailing close-hauled, by putting the helm alee and shifting the tacks and sails so that she will proceed to windward nearly at right angles to her former course. In tacking, a vessel is brought to point at first directly to windward, and then so that the wind will blow against the other side.

A retractable azimuth thruster is capable of propelling the ship at 10 knots, and can be considered as an emergency machinery set in case of damage to propeller or gears or total engine failure. A shaft generator of 1500 kW is located in the forward engine room, and there are three GM Detroit diesel motors with Volund Teknik generators, each with an output of 480 kW, installed with one in the forward and two in the aft engine room. An 127 kW emergency diesel generating set is fitted in a compartment under the forecastle deck.

The ship has an endurance of 8300 nautical miles at varying speeds with a 10 per cent fuel reserve. Provisions cover four months' operations, and the stocks of spare parts are sufficient for 6 months at sea without replenishment. Helicopter fuel suffices for 150 flying hours. The frigate is ice strengthened and is able to proceed through 80 cm of solid ice. The hull has an icebreaking bow and stem lines suitable for operations in ice with only one propeller. Maximum continuous speed is 20 knots in four metre seas. The sea keeping qualities allow the ship to stand up to wind gusts of 150 knots during light ice conditions and operate in all sea conditions at speeds of 4-5 knots.

THRUST-BLOCK

On a ship, the thrust-block is the block through which the drive of the ship's propeller is imparted to the ship. In large reciprocating-engine ships, the thrust-block was a heavy, trough-shaped casting with a bearing at each-end, wherein revolved the thrust-shaft which was interposed between the crank-shaft and the propeller-shaft proper. A number of equidistant collars, projecting from the thrust-shaft, alternated with an equal number of inverted horseshoe-shaped collars adjusted by nuts on two strong bars on the thrust-block. The horseshoe collars, which were faced with anti-friction metal, took the thrust from the shaft and transmitted it through the rods to the block, and so to the ship. These horseshoe collars were hollow and cooled by a constant flow of water through them.
In small piston marine engines the thrust-block is incorporated with a bearing, which has grooves in its lower part and a cap to fit the shaft collars.
In the thrust-block of the Parsons marine turbine, which, owing to the reaction of the steam on its blades, itself transmitted a considerable part of the thrust through its own casing, both base and cap were grooved to take flat brass rings, each divided into two parts horizontally. The thrust was transmitted from the collars to the rings, and from them to the thrust-block. The two halves of the collar were not quite aligned vertically, in order that the propeller, when moving ahead, could press on the upper half and, when reversed, on the lower half.
Later the much shorter Michell thrust-block was developed and replaced the earlier designs. In the Michell thrust-block the series of alternating collars is replaced by a single collar on the shaft and a set of rocking pads arranged in a circle on the block, each pad being able to rock slightly. The rocking motion allows the oil to wedge itself in between the collar and the pads and a film of oil being maintained even at high pressure.

TICONDEROGA CLASS

The Ticonderoga Class is an American guided missile cruiser class of ship. Twenty-seven Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruisers were built between 1983 and 1994. Thirteen ships are operational in the US Navy Atlantic Fleet and fourteen in the Pacific Fleet, two of which are based in Japan in the US Naval Forces Base at Yokosuka. A number of Ticonderoga Class cruisers were deployed in the Gulf crisis in 1991 where the USS Princeton sustained mine damage. Tomahawk missiles were deployed in 1993 against targets in Iraq enforcing 'no fly' zone restrictions. The ships also deployed the Tomahawk missile against targets in Bosnia during 1995. The Ticonderoga has a full load displacement of 9,500 tons and the ship design is based on a larger version of the successful Spruance Class 8,000 ton destroyer.

The Ticonderoga Class, like the Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers, are equipped with the Aegis Combat System which integrates the ship's electronic sensors and weapons systems to engage anti-ship missile threats. Twenty-two of the twenty-seven Ticonderoga Class are fitted with two Mark 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS), each armed with eight Tomahawk missiles. Two quadruple launchers for the Boeing Harpoon surface-to-surface missile system are installed on the gun deck at the stern of the ship. The Ticonderoga Class ships are armed with the Raytheon Standard Missile 2MR surface-to-air missile 60 missiles are carried for each of the two Mark 41 Vertical Launch Systems (VLS). The first five of the Ticonderoga Class ships are not fitted with Vertical Launchers and are armed with conventional twin launchers. The ships' anti-submarine rocket is the Lockheed Martin Vertical Launch ASROC armed with the Mark 50 or Mark-46 torpedo and is launched from the Mark 41 VLS launcher. A triple tube torpedo launcher is installed in each side of the hull below the helicopter deck and at about 5.5 metres above sea level. The 324 mm tubes are capable of launching the Mark-46 Mod 5 torpedo and Mark 50 torpedo.

The ships' main guns are the United Defense MK-45 127mm/54 naval guns installed on the gun decks at the bow and stern of the ship. The guns are each capable of firing 32 kg shells to a target range of 22 kilometres at a maximum firing rate of 20 rounds per minute. In the midship position, two Raytheon Phalanx Mark 15 close in weapon systems are installed, one port and one starboard. Phalanx has a 20 mm/53 calibre six barrel gun capable of firing 3,000 rounds per minute to a target range of 1.5 kilometres. The ships support two Sikorsky SH-60B Seahawk helicopters fitted with the LAMPS mission avionics which provides the capability of directing tactical actions by the ship and air team. The ships' propulsion system consists of four General Electric LM 2500 gas turbine engines which provide a sustained power level of 86,000 horsepower. The engines drive two shafts with controllable pitch propellers. The propulsion system provides a maximum speed over 30 knots. At an economical speed of 20 knots the ships have a range over 6,000 miles.

TORPEDO

A torpedo is a cylindrical or cigar-shaped vessel carrying a charge of high explosive and used as a weapon in naval warfare. Torpedoes were invented around 1870, and are effectively a small submarine comprised of three sections: the warhead, the firing mechanism and the engine equipment. Torpedoes suffer at long range from their relatively slow rate of travel which allows a target to take evasive action should the torpedo be observed.

TORPEDO BOAT

Torpedo Boats were an early predecessor to the Torpedo Boat Destroyer used extensively during the early part of the Great War and during the Second World War. They were fast fighting ships, primarily designed as small vessels to carry torpedoes, equipped with torpedoes and light guns. Torpedo boats were first invented in 1873 and were launches of about 7.5 tons displacement and a speed of about 15 knots. Around 1893 they were replaced in most navies by larger vessels which were known as destroyers or torpedo boat destroyers.
Torpedo boats were cheap to produce, and during the Second World War both the German and Allied navies possessed large numbers of them. British torpedo boats constructed under a 1938 programme were typically about 30 tons displacement, armed with two 21-inch torpedo tubes and two anti-aircraft machine guns and had a top speed of about 40 knots or more.
German Second World War motor torpedo boats were about 62 tons displacement, were powered by diesel engines and had a top speed of about 34 knots, and were made of wood or composite material and were renowned for being sturdy and seaworthy vessels.

TORPEDO NET

Torpedo nets were strong steel meshed nets carried out from a ship's side by booms as a protection against torpedoes. During the Great War it was found that torpedo nets were blown loose by shell fire and could snag around the ship's propellers, and torpedo nets were abandoned as a ship defence.
