The Probert Encyclopaedia of Ships

XAUEN

The Xauen was a British-built former trawler of 750 tons displacement launched in 1918 as the Henry Cramwell purchased by Spain as a coastguard vessel in 1922. The Xauen was coal powered providing a top speed of 10 knots and carried a complement of 39. She was armed with two 3 inch guns.

XE

The XE were a series of British midget submarines of 30 tons displacement in use during the Second World War. The XEs carried a crew of three and were powered by a Gardener engine and an electric motor providing a top speed of 6.5 knots surfaced and 6 knots submerged.

XEBEC

A xebec (or chebeck) is a small, sharp-built three-masted vessel usually with lateen sails that originated in the western Mediterranean during the 17th century. They were used for coasting voyages in the Mediterranean and on the ocean coasts of Spain and Portugal, and were often armed and used to raid merchantmen. It differs from the felucca in possessing both square and lateen sails, the felucca having only lateen sails. The xebec was formerly much used by Algerian pirates.

XIAN

The Xian is a Chinese Type 051, Luda Class destroyer of 3250 tons. She carries a complement of 285 including twenty-seven officers, and has a top speed of 32 knots and a range of 8000 km at 14 knots. She is armed with six Fei Lung 2 (Flying Dragon) anti-ship missile launchers arranged as two triple arrangements; four Soviet 130 mm/58 in two twin arrangements guns; eight Chinese 57 mm/70 arranged in four twin guns; eight Chinese 37 mm/63 in four twin arrangements guns; eight Soviet 25 mm/60 in four twin arrangements anti-aircraft guns; two FQF 2500 12-tubed fixed launcher anti-ship mortars; depth charges and mines. Two Harbin Z-9A (Dauphin) helicopters are also carried.
