YAVUZ

The Yavuz was a German-built Turkish battle-cruiser of 23100 tons displacement launched in 1911 as the German ship Goeben, and transferred to Turkey in 1914. The Yavuz was powered by twenty-four Schulz-Thornycroft boilers providing a top speed of 27 knots and a range of 8560 km at 10 knots. She carried a complement of 1300 when used as a flagship and was armed with ten 11 inch guns; ten 5.9 inch guns; four 3.5 inch anti-aircraft guns; twelve 40 mm anti-aircraft guns; four machine-guns and two 19.7 inch torpedo tubes. During the Great War the Yavuz twice hit mines, being involved with five mines in all, but survived the damage and was repaired in 1930 and refitted in 1938.

YELLOWKNIFE

The Yellowknife is a Canadian Kingston Class maritime coastal defence vessel. The ship is equipped with a Bofors 40 millimetre rapid fire gun, model 60 Mk 5c and two 0.50 inch calibre machine-guns. The machine-guns are mounted one either side at the front of the bridge deck. In a depressed position each machine-gun fires in an arc of fire of 118 degrees. The Bofors gun is mounted on the forecastle deck and the arc of fire extends forwards by +/- 120 degrees. The propulsion system provides 15 knots maximum continuous speed. The range at the economical cruising speed of nine knots using two engines is 5000 nautical miles with a 20% margin in tank capacity. Mechanical Minesweeping is carried out at eight knots.

The Yildiray was powered by two sets of Burmeister and Wain diesel engines providing a top speed of 20 knots surface and 9 knots submerged. YORK

HMS York was a British cruiser of 8250 tons displacement designed by Sir William Berry as the first attempt by one of the Treaty Powers to break away from the 10,000 tons cruiser design, the reduction in displacement being achieved by the loss of two 8-inch guns. HMS York was launched in 1928 and completed in 1930. She carried a crew of 600 and was powered by eight Admiralty 3-drum type oil fuelled boilers providing a top speed of 32 knots and a range of 16000 km at 14 knots. Armaments consisted of six 8-inch guns; eight 4-inch anti-aircraft guns; four 3-pdr guns; fourteen smaller guns and six 21-inch torpedo tubes arranged in two triples. An aircraft was designed to be carried, but it was found that the turrets were too light for the catapult and it was removed. HMS York was sunk in Suda Bay, Crete in 1941.

HMS York is a British Type 42 destroyer of 3500 tons displacement launched in 1982. HMS York is powered by two Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbines; two Rolls-Royce Tyne RM1C gas turbines used for cruising and four diesel generators providing a top speed of 30 knots and a range of 6400 km at 18 knots. A Westland Lynx HAS 3 helicopter is also carried.

YORKTOWN

The USS Yorktown was an American aircraft carrier of 19900 tons displacement launched in 1936 and sunk in the Pacific in July 1942. The USS Yorktown carried a complement of 2072 including flying personnel and 81 aircraft, though provision was provided to carry over 100 aircraft. She was powered by nine Babcock and Wilcox Express type boilers providing a top speed of 34 knots. She was armed with eight 5 inch dual purpose guns; sixteen 1.1 inch anti-aircraft machine-guns and sixteen smaller machine-guns. Unusually, the aircraft could be catapulted from the hanger deck as well as from the flight deck, thereby increasing the number of aircraft that could be put in the air at short notice.

The USS Yorktown was an American Essex Class fleet aircraft carrier of 27100 tons displacement launched in 1943. The USS Yorktown was powered by eight Babcock and Wilcox boilers providing a top speed of 33 knots. She carried a complement of 2900 and normally 82 aircraft though up to 103 could be carried. She was armed with twelve 5 inch guns; seventy-two 40 mm anti-aircraft guns and fifty-two 20 mm anti-aircraft guns mounted in quads.

The Ahmed Yani (formerly the Van Galen) is an Indonesian Van Spiejk Class frigate launched in 1965 and transferred to the Indonesian navy from the Netherlands in the mid-1980s. She has a displacement of 2225 tons and is powered by two Werkspoor/English Electric double reduction geared turbines rated at 30000 shp providing a top speed of 28.5 knots and a maximum range of 7200 km at 12 knots. She is manned by a crew of 180. Armaments consist of two Short Bros Seacat anti-aircraft quad missile launchers; one OTO Melara 76 mm/62 compact dual-purpose gun and six 324 mm Mk 32 torpedo tubes arranged in two triple arrangements, firing the Honeywell Mk 46 anti-submarine torpedo. A Westland Westland Wasp helicopter is also carried.
