Columbia is the state capital of South Carolina state and the county seat of Richland County. It became the satte capitalin 1790 under an act of the Legislature which provided for the funding of the city. It is the site of South Carolina university which was founded in 1805. In 1865, during the American Civil War, during the evacuation of the city by General Wade Hamilton a large quanity of cotton was fired and the city was severely damaged by the resulting fire.
