New York is a state in north east USA. It was was one of the original thirteen colonies. It was first discovered by Verrazano in 1524 and was rediscovered by Henry Hudson in 1609 while in the employ of the Dutch East India Company, while seeking for a passage to India. It was first settled by the Dutch in 1614, and they were disposessed by the English in 1664. It was then named New York because the English king, Charles II, had given the territory to his brother, the Duke of York.
New York (New York City) is a city partly in Bronx County, partly in Richmond County, partly in Queens County, partly in Kings County and partly in New York County USA. The city was originally known as New Amsterdam when it was settled by the Dutch in 1623. In August, 1664, the city surrendered to the British under the Duke of York, and the name was changed to New York, an English form of government being established, and was later called New Orange when, in 1673, it was retaken from England by the States General of Holland. It was so called in honour of the Prince of Orange. It was restored to the British crown, however, on November the 10th 1674, and returned to being called New York. On September the 1st, 1892, owing to the presence of cholera, President Harrison proclaimed a twenty-days' quarantine of New York.
