The M242 is an American 25 mm calibre chain gun mounted on M2 and M3 IFVs and CFVs. It has a muzzle velocity of 1100 metres per second and fires APDS ammunition with armour penetration of 27 mm at 500 metres. The rate of fire is 100, 200 or 500 rounds per minute.

The M2A1 (Bradley) infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) entered service with the US army in 1982. It carries a crew of 3 and a 7 man squad. The M2A1 is armed with a twin TOW 2 launcher in the turret and can carry an additional five missiles, including TOWs, Dragons and Stingers. The main gun is a 25 mm Hughes automatic chain gun for which 900 rounds of APDS and HE ammunition is carried. The M2A1 has a top road speed of 66 kph.

The M3A1 (Bradley) CFV is a variant of the M2A1 used by the American army in reconnaissance units. It carries a crew of three plus two infantry scouts used to load the twin TOW 2 launcher in the turret. The main gun is a 25 mm automatic chain gun for which 1200 rounds of APDS and HE ammunition are carried. 12 missiles are carried for the TOW missile launcher. The M3A1 has a top road speed of 66 kph.
