I 5 was a Japanese Ocean-going experimental submarine of 1955 tons displacement launched in 1931. I 5 was powered by two sets of diesel engines providing a top speed of 17 knots surfaced and 9 knots submerged. She was armed with one 5.5 inch gun; two anti-aircraft machine-guns and six 21-inch torpedo tubes. A seaplane with folding wings was carried housed in two tubular sections on either side of the superstructure abaft of the conning tower instead of a second gun.
