ELIJAH LOVEJOY

Elijah P Lovejoy was an American newspaper man and abolitionist. He was born in 1802 and died in 1837. He established the St Louis Observer in 1833, in which he ardently attacked slavery. He was compelled by violent pro-slavery sentiment to remove his paper to Alton, Illinois in 1836, where his establishment was three times sacked by a mob. At a fourth attack one of the mob was killed and Elijah Lovejoy was shot and killed by the remained of the mob.

FANNY ADAMS

Fanny Adams was an eight-year old British girl who in August 1867, was murdered at Alton, Hampshire while playing with her sister and a friend, and her body dismembered and the parts spread about local fields or in the river. Frederick Baker, a local clerk was convicted of the murder and was hanged on Christmas eve. Coincidentally, just after her murder, the British navy changed rations to chopped and cooked meat, leading to the sailors to joke that Fanny Adams' remains were being served up to them.

ALTON

Alton (recorded in the Domesday Book as Aultone) is a town in Hampshire, England at the source of the River Wey. Alton developed as a proper market town on the road from London and was for many years a brewing centre - in 1900 the town was famous for its ale - and was the site of the Watney's Brewery. The prominent church was the scene of a battle in the Civil War - 500 soldiers made their final stand actually inside the church in 1643.
