ANCONA

The Ancona is a breed of Italian chicken, with an elongated appearance and black and white feathers and bright yellow legs. The Ancona chicken was intruduced to Britain during the 19th century and from there exported around the world. The Ancona has a fairly large, single comb and lays white-shelled eggs. They are active birds and excellent fliers.

The Fabrianese is a breed of sheep found in Ancona Province, Marche Region of Italy. The Fabrianese is a course wool breed kept for both meat and milk production. The breed is polled and exhibits a Roman nose. It originated from local Apennine crossed to Bergamasca.

Bendict XIV (real name Prospero Lambertini) was an Italian pope. He was born in 1675 at Bologna and died in 1758. A man of superior talents, passionately fond of learning, of historical researches, and monuments of art, Benedict XIII. made him, in 1727, bishop of Ancona; in 1728 cardinal, and in 1732 archbishop of Bologna. In every station he fulfilled his duties with the most conscientious zeal. He succeeded Clement XII as pope in 1740, and showed himself a liberal patron of literature and science. He was the author of several esteemed religious works.

BENEDICT XIV

Pope Benedict XIV (real name Prospero Lambertini) was Pope from 1740 until 1758. He was born in 1675 at Bologna and died in 1758. He became bishop of Ancona in 1727, cardinal in 1728, and archbishop of Bologna in 1731. In 1742 and 1743 he published bulls forbidding the accommodation of Christian usage to pagan superstition.

Leone Levi was an English economist. He was born in 1821 at Ancona, Italy and died in 1888. He came to England in 1844 and settled at Liverpool where he taught political economy and advocated the establishment of chambers of commerce.

SIMONE ST BON

Simone Arturo St Bon was an Italian admiral. He was born in 1823 at Chambery and died in 1892. He modernised the Italian navy, advocating the use of large battleships. Under Minghetti he was minister of marine, resigning in 1876 to resume active service, but returning to office in 1891. He served during the Crimean War at Ancona in 1860 and at the siege of Gaeta, and in the naval battle off Lissa in 1866.

LORETO

Loreto is a town near Ancona in eastern central Italy to which pilgrims travel to see the 'Holy House', said to have been the home of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth and (according to legend) brought to Loreto by angels in 1295. In 1920 Our Lady of Loreto was officially declared to be the patron of aviators.
