THOMAS BODLEY

Sir Thomas Bodley was the founder of the Bodleian Library at Oxford. He was born in 1544 at Exeter and died in 1612. He was educated partly at Geneva, whither his parents, who were Protestants, had retired in the reign of Queen Mary. On the accession of Elizabeth I they returned home, and he completed his studies at Magdalen College, Oxford. He travelled much on the Continent, and was employed in various embassies to Denmark, Germany, France, and Holland. In 1597 he returned home, and dedicated the remainder of his life to the re-establishment and augmentation of the public library at Oxford. He expended a very large sum in collecting rare and valuable books, besides leaving an estate for the support of the library. He was knighted at the accession of James I.

ANNATES

Annates were a year's income claimed for many centuries by the pope on the death of any bishop, abbot, or parish priest, to be paid by his successor. In England they were at first paid to the Archbishop of Canterbury, but were afterwards appropriated by the popes. In 1532 the Parliament gave them to the crown; but Queen Anne restored them to the church by applying them to the augmentation of poor livings.
