FREDERIC BASTIAT

Frederic Bastiat was a French economis. He was born in 1801 at Bayonne 1801 and died in 1850. An advocate of free-trade, he became acquainted with Cobden and the English free-traders, whose speeches he translated into French. His chief works were: Sophismes Economiques (1846), Propriete et Loi, Justice et Fraternite (1848), Protectionisme et Communisme (1849), Harmonies Economiques (1849) translated into English (1860), etc.

JEAN BERNARD JAUREGUIBERRY

Jean Bernard Jaureguiberry was a French admiral. He was born in 1815 at Bayonne and died in 1887. During the Franco-German war he distinguished himself by his skilful handling of troops at Orleans and at Le Mans. He had a battleship - the Jaureguiberry - named after him.

PIERRE AUGEREAU

Pierre Francios Charles Augereau, Duke of Castiglione, was Marshal of France. He was born in 1757 at Paris and died in 1816. The son of a mason, he adopted the life of a soldier, and by 1796 had reached the rank of general of division in the army of Italy. At Casale, Lodi, Castiglione, and Arcole, he highly distinguished himself. In 1797 he was at Paris, and was the instrument of the coup d'etat of the 18th of Fructidor (4th of September). In 1799 he was chosen a member of the Council of Five Hundred. He then obtained the command of the army in Holland, and fought until the end of the campaign. In 1803 he was appointed to lead the army collected at Bayonne against Portugal. In 1804 he was named marshal of the empire, and grand officer of the Legion of Honour. He subsequently took part in the battles of Jena and Eyiau, held a command in Spain, and in July, 1813, led the army in Bavaria against Saxony, taking part in the battle of Leipzig. On Napoleon's abdication he submitted to Louis XVIII., who named him a peer.

WILLIAM CARR

William Carr (Viscount Beresford) was an English soldier. He was born in 1768 and died in 1854. A natural son of the first Marquis of Waterford, he entered the army, lost an eye in Nova Scotia, served at Toulon, and in Corsica, the West Indies, and Egypt. In 1806, as brigadier-general, he commanded the land force in the expedition to Buenos Ayres; and in 1808 remodelled the Portuguese army, receiving in return the titles Marshal of Portugal, Duke of Elvas, and Marquis of Santo Campo. He was subsequently engaged at Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, and Bayonne, and for his bravery at the battle of Toulouse was raised to the peerage with the title of Baron (Viscount, 1823) Beresford.
