BEACON

Picture of Beacon

A beacon is ignited, combustible materials placed in an iron cage, elevated upon a pole or other natural elevation, so as to be seen from a distance. Beacons were formerly used to guide travellers across unfrequented parts of the country, and to alarm the inhabitants on the occasion of an invasion or a rebellion. It was from the earlier beacons that street lighting first developed in London.

CRESSET

Picture of Cresset

A cresset is a basket of open iron-work in which wood or coal is burned as a beacon. Formerly the cresset was used where lighthouses are now erected. The name was also given in the middle ages and later indifferently to the fixed candlesticks in great halls and churches and to lamps or fire-pans suspended on pivots and carried on poles in processions, municipal and military watches, etc.

LOCALIZER

A localizer is a form of radio beacon used in instrument landing systems for aircraft. It is located about 230 metres beyond the stop end of an airfield runway and radiates two signals of different frequencies from two aerials whose polar diagrams overlap in such a way that their signals are of equal strength along the centre of the runway. In the receiving equipment fitted in the aircraft the two signals are applied to a centre-zero instrument. When the indicating pointer of the instrument is in the centre (zero) position the pilot knows that he is correctly aligned with the runway.

TRIANGULATION

Triangulation is a technique employed in surveying. A base-line is set out in a convenient and level situation and measured with great accuracy. A theodolite is then set up at each end of the base- line, and readings are taken on some prominent point or beacon, giving the angular displacement of the beacon relative to the base-line. A triangle is thus formed, of which the size of the angles and the length of one side are known, and therefore the length of the remaining sides may be calculated.
