The X Club was a private British dining club of scientists which met from 1864 to 1892. The X Club was comprised of Joseph Hooker the botanist; T H Huxley a biologist; John Tyndall, a physicist; John Lubbock, a banker, ethnologist, and entomologist; William Spottiswoode, the Queen's Printer and an amateur mathematician; Edward Frankland, a chemist; George Busk, a retired surgeon, comparative anatomist, and microscopist; T A Hirst, a mathematician; and Herbert Spencer, a sociologist and philosopher of evolution.
Research X Club
A busk was a stiffener made from wood, whalebone, metal or other material inserted in the front of a corset. The name was also applied to a corset containing such a stiffener. Busks were made in various shapes with matching names such as 'spoon busk' 'swan bill busk' and 'pear shaped busk'.

A peascod bellied doublet was a form of man's doublet popular during the 1580's which was padded so as to give the impression of an enhanced stomach or paunch. The peascod bellied doublet had a wooden busk at the front and strips of whalebone in the seams to maintain its shape.
