The ISO (International Standards Organisation) assigns a two character code to each country name. These codes are used by Internet 'whois' databases (these two character abbreviations are the whois country codes) and also other applications.

In computing, ATAPI is a type of CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that is connected to an IDE controller.

ATRAC is an abbreviation for Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding, and is the digital audio encoding method used in minidiscs. The algorithm divides the 16 bit 44.1 KHz digital signal it receives into 52 sub-bands in the frequency domain (after a Fast Fourier Transform). A psycho-acoustic transfer function that takes advantage of the masking effect and the absolute hearing threshold then removes enough information to reduce the data stream to 1/5th of the original size. Each channel receives that treatment separately (the Sony MZ-1 portable MD recorder features one ATRAC encoder/decoder chip per channel). Earlier versions of ATRAC, prior to version 3.5 were noisy, adding noise to recordings which could be heard during silent or very quiet passages in the audio recording. Later versions, 3.5 and onwards, are comparable to CD quality when listened to by the human ear. The first version of ATRAC had a frequency response up to 15 kHz, by version 3.5 that had increased to 18 kHz and version 4.5 reached 20 kHz.

Cadmium is a comparatively rare element related to zinc, and occurring in some zinc ores. It is a bluish-white metal, both ductile and malleable with the symbol Cd. It was discovered by Stromeyer in 1817, who named it from its association with zinc or zinc ore. Cadmium is used as the basis of a number of pigments.

The error performing inpage operation message is an error message displayed by the Windows operating systems when it encounters a problem reading a small file (less than 256Kb) from a removable disk, such as a floppy diskette, CD-ROM or DVD. The error usually indicates a physical problem with the source diskette, CD or DVD.

Gadolinium is a silvery white metal element with the symbol Gd of the group of rare earth metals. It is found in the mineral gadolinite. It is ferromagnetic (strongly attracted by a magnet). The metal is relatively stable in dry air, but in moist air it tarnishes with the formation of a loosely adhering oxide film which 'spalls' off and exposes more surface to oxidation. The metal reacts slowly with water and is soluble in dilute acid.
Gadolinium has the highest thermal neutron capture cross-section of any known element. Gadolinium is used for making gadolinium yttrium garnets which have microwave applications.
Gadolinium compounds are used for making phosphors for colour TV tubes. Gadolinium is also used in alloys and CD disks and has superconductive properties. Solutions of gadolinium compounds are used as intravenous contrasts to enhance images in patients undergoing MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Minidisc is a form of technology that first appeared around 1992 and is like a cross between a CD and a cassette. It enables recordings to be made digitally, like a CD, but edited, named and moved around. Like a cassette system, minidisc allows recordings to be made from any source. The recording is stored in a compressed, digital format, using the ATRAC compression method, which was developed in response to the music indutsry's concerns over piracy and as such was designed not to be computer compatible, unlike CDs which are fully computer readable and writable.
