KENNEBEC EXPEDITION

The Kennebec Expedition was an expedition along the Kennebec River, sent but by George Washington under Benedict Arnold, during the American War of Independence in 1775, to co-operate with Montgomery's Canada expedition. Benedict Arnold was assisted in this campaign by a number of Indians. With 1100 men Benedict Arnold reached Port Augusta, Maine, and thence proceeded through the wilderness along the Kennebec toward Quebec. Upon reaching that place, which was garrisoned by a small force, he made the ascent at Wolfe's Cove and demanded a surrender. The garrison refused and Benedict Arnold, becoming frightened, drew off. He despatched Burr to Montreal, which had been captured by Montgomery. The latter joined Benedict Arnold at Quebec and together they assaulted the town. Montgomery was killed and his force drew off under Campbell. Benedict Arnold kept Carleton, the English commander, shut up in Quebec for three months, until he was driven away by Burgoyne.
