In heraldry, an orle (crest-wreath) is a bearing, in the form of a fillet, round the shield, within, but at some distance from, the border. The term is also applied to the wreath, or chaplet, surmounting or encircling the helmet of a knight and bearing the crest. During the Middle Ages the orle was formed of two rolls of silk of the principal metal and colour in the arms, twisted together so as to show the metal and colour alternately. The orle first appears in English heraldry around 1375. Research Orle
