ARMINIANISM

Arminianism is a doctrine in Christianity, formulated in the 17th century and named after the Dutch Calvinist Jacobus Arminius, which declares that human free will can exist without limiting God's power or contradicting the Bible. Arminius believed predestination was biblical and true - that God had intended some persons for heaven and others for hell, as indicated by Jesus' reference to ' sheep and goats.' But he focused on God's love more than on God's power in speaking of election, the process by which God chose those intended for heaven. After Arminius died, a group of ministers who sympathised with his views developed a systematic and rational theology based on his teachings. In their declaration, a remonstrance issued in 1610, the Arminians argued that election was conditioned by faith, that grace could be rejected, that the work of Christ was intended for all persons, and that it was possible for believers to fall from grace. At the Synod of Dort, or Dordrecht, the High Calvinists prevailed over the Arminian party and condemned the Remonstrants.

The Synod of Dort declared that Christ's work was meant only for those elect to salvation, that people believing could not fall from grace, and that God's election depended on no conditions. Remonstrants were not tolerated at all in Holland until 1630, and then not fully until 1795. They have, however, continued an Arminian tradition in the Netherlands into the late 20th century. The British theologian John Wesley studied and affirmed the work of Arminius in his Methodist movement during the 18th century in England. American Methodists for the most part have leaned toward the theology of the Remonstrants. In popular expression Arminianism has come to mean that no predestination exists and people are free to follow or reject the gospel.

CONDITIONED

In philosophy, Conditioned and Unconditioned are terms which were introduced by Sir William Hamilton. The Unconditioned is regarded by Sir William Hamilton as a genus including two species: the Infinite, or the unconditionally unlimited, and the Absolute, or the unconditionally limited; and the thesis which he maintains and expounds, and which forms one of the leading doctrines of his philosophical system, is that the Unconditioned, as thus explained, is entirely unthinkable. The mind is confined, in point of knowledge though not of faith, to the limited and conditioned - the Conditioned being the mean between two unconditionates, mutually exclusive and equally inconceivable, but of which, on the principles of contradiction and excluded middle, one must be admitted as necessary. Thus infinite space is inconceivable by us, while at the same time it is equally impossible to us to conceive of space as finite; yet one of these must be admitted necessary, and our conception is in some sense a mean between the inconceivables. The doctrine was applied by Mansel to determine the limits of religious thought.

LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE

Legionnaires' disease is a form of pneumonia first discovered in 1976 among members of the American Legion attending a convention in Philadelphia. The cause of the disease is the bacteria Legionella pneumophila which is found in water-tanks, air-conditioning units and other sources of static or sheltered water. The bacteria is spread through water droplets in the air, frequently affecting large numbers of people in modern, air-conditioned buildings. Diagnosis is difficult as the bacteria is hard to isolate, and often patients die before Legionnaires' disease is diagnosed.

COMMANDO RANGER

The Commando Ranger (known to the USAF as the Peacekeeper) is an American armoured vehicle built for the USAF as a security vehicle to patrol air bases. The Commando Ranger carries a crew of two plus six passengers protected by 7 mm thick armour in an air-conditioned truck based on a standard Chrysler truck chassis. The Commando Ranger is armed with one or two 7.62 mm machine-guns, and has firing ports for the passengers. A Dodge 360 CID V-8 petrol engine provides a top speed of 112 kmh and a range of 556 km.

MAINFRAME

A mainframe is the largest type of computer, requiring an air-conditioned room and special staff, including operators, programmers, and system analysts, to run it. They are used by large organisations, such as banks, because they can handle vast amounts of information with ease and calculate at high speed. They can also handle many users simultaneously
