Evelyn Baring was a British statesman and the first Earl of Cromer. He was born in 1841 and died in 1917. He was secretary to the Viceroy of India from 1872 until 1876 and commissioner of the Egyptian Public debt from 1877 until 1879.

HENRY TRAILL

Picture of Henry Traill

Henry Duff Traill was an English writer and journalist. He was born in 1842 at Blackheath and died in 1900. Educated at the Merchant Taylors' School and St John's College, Oxford, he became a barrister and in 1871 a civil servant and a part time journalist. He was the first editor of 'Literature' and wrote biographies of Coleridge, Sterne, William III, Shaftsbury, Strafford, Lord Salisbury, Lord Cromer and Sir John Franklin as well as writing numerous letters to the Pall Mall Gazette, St James' Gazette, Saturday Review and the Daily Telegraph.

CROMER

HMS Cromer was a British Bangor Class minesweeper of about 665 tons displacement launched around 1941 and sunk during the Second World War. HMS Bayfield was powered by two 3-drum small tube type boilers providing a top speed of 16 knots. She carried a complement of 60 and was armed with one 3 inch anti-aircraft gun; two 20 mm anti-aircraft guns and four machine-guns.

HMS Cromer is powered by two Paxman Valenta 6-RP 200E diesel engines providing a top speed of 13 knots and a range of 4800 km at 12 knots. She carries a crew of 34 including seven officers and can accommodate 40. Armaments consist of a Oerlikon/DES 30 mm/75 DS 30B dual-purpose gun.
