DAD'S ARMY

Dad's Army was a very successful BBC comedy set in a south-coast town in England, about a group of British home guard volunteers during the Second World War led by an arrogant captain and a camp sergeant.

FREDDY TRUEMAN

Frederic Sewards Trueman (Freddy Trueman) was an English cricketer. He was born in 1931 at Stainton, Yorkshire and died in 2006. After serving an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he became a professional cricketer, playing for Yorkshire from 1949 until 1968, and for England in 67 test matches between 1952 and 1965 and was the first bowler to take 300 test wickets. On three occasions he took ten wickets in a match, and during his first-class career he took 2304 wickets and made three centuries. After retiring from playing cricket he worked as a cricket writer and broadcaster where his down-to-earth approach and sharp tongue earned him notoriety. Freddy Trueman also made a cameo appearance in an episode of the BBC comedy 'Dad's Army' as a cricketer brought in by the wardens in a friendly match against the Home Guard.

ARNOLD RIDLEY

Arnold Ridley was an English actor, play-writer and film director. He was born in 1896 at Bath, Somerset and died in 1984. He is best known for playing the role of 'Godfrey' in the television comedy series 'Dad's Army', though previously he had appeared in the soap opera 'Crossroads' in 1964 as 'the Reverend Guy Atkins'. In 1982 he was awarded the OBE for services to British theatre.

BUD FLANAGAN

Bud Flanagan was a British comedian and actor. He was born in 1896 at London and died in 1968 of a heart attack. Together with Chesney Allen he formed 'Flanagan and Allen' a renowned comedy double-act which appeared at the 'Crazy Gang' revues. Younger people may know Bud Flanagan as the voice singing the theme tune to the popular television series 'Dad's Army'.

CLIVE DUNN

Clive Dunn is an English actor. He was born in 1920. Entering acting in 1936 during the Second World War he served with the 4th Hussars, was captured and spent four years in a POW camp in Austria. After the war he returned to acting, and in the 1960s developed his role playing old men in the series Bootsie and Snudge before in 1968 being cast as the elderly Lance-corporal Jones in the BBC TV series 'Dad's Army', a role for which he won the OBE.

John Le Mesurier was an English comedy actor. He was born in 1912 at Bedford and died in 1983. He was schooled in Dorset and destined for a career in Law, before at the age of twenty entering drama school. During the Second World War he served as a captain in India before returning to acting after the war appearing in several episodes of 'Hancock's Half Hour' before landing the role of sergeant Wilson in the BBC TV series 'Dad's Army' in 1968.
