Eamon De Valera is an Irish national leader. He commanded an insurgent battalion during the uprising of Easter 1916. He established the independent state of Eire in 1937.

U-35

U-35 was a German sea-going submarine of 500 tons displacement launched in 1936. She had a top speed of 16.5 knots surfaced, 8 knots submerged and carried a complement of 35. Armaments consisted of one 3.5 inch gun; one 1 pdr anti-aircraft guns and five 21 inch torpedo tubes, four in the bow and one in the stern. In October 1939 U-35 sank the Greek steamer Diamantis some 40 miles off Lands End, having first taken the crew off and taken them on board the submarine where they were treated to hot food, dry clothes, cigarettes and general hospitality before being put ashore at Ventry, in Kerry in Eire, 34 hours later. The incredible story was recounted in the October the 28th issue of the British paper 'The War Illustrated'.
