In architecture a diminishing rule is a board cut with a concave edge, for fixing the entasis and curvature of a shaft.

ENTASIS

In architecture, an entasis is a slight convex swelling of the shaft of a column. Entasis is deliberately introduced into columns to correct the optical illusion whereby the columns appear to be concave. Entasis is to be found in almost all the Grecian examples.
