The FN-FNC is a Belgian gas operated selective fire assaultrifle developed to replace the FN CAL, and first produced in the late 1970's. The FN-FNC is chambered for the 5.56 mm x 45 cartridge and takes a 30-round box magazine (interchangeable with the magazine for the US Armalite AR-15rifle) and has a cyclic rate of between 600 and 750 rounds-per-minute. The muzzle velocity varies with the cartridge used, standard NATO M193 or FN SS109, and is between 915 and 965 metres per second. The FN-FNC has a 450 mm long barrel, folding stock and is fitted with a cylindrical post foresight and a flip aperture rearsight. The FN-FNC when fitted with a barrel rifled for the FN SS109 cartridge has an improved effective range, approaching that of rifles chambered for the 7.62 mm cartridge, and can penetrate a US steel army helmet at a range of 1100 metres Research FN-FNC
