The Fram was a three-masted schooner of 402 tons displacement built in 1892 for Nansen's expedition to the Arctic, and also used by Sverdrup in 1899 in Baffin Bay and by Amundsen in the Antarctic between 1910 and 1912. The Fram was 117 feet long, with triple external planking ranging from 24 to 28 inches thick, and was fitted with auxiliary engines driving a screw propeller.
