FANNY ADAMS

Fanny Adams was an eight-year old British girl who in August 1867, was murdered at Alton, Hampshire while playing with her sister and a friend, and her body dismembered and the parts spread about local fields or in the river. Frederick Baker, a local clerk was convicted of the murder and was hanged on Christmas eve. Coincidentally, just after her murder, the British navy changed rations to chopped and cooked meat, leading to the sailors to joke that Fanny Adams' remains were being served up to them.

FITZ-GREENE HALLECK

Fitz-Greene Halleck was an American writer. He was born in 1790 at Connecticut and died in 1867. He was a-counting-room clerk in a New York banking house from 1811 to 1849. In partnership with Joseph Drake he published the 'Croakers' in 1819. He wrote 'Twilight', 'Fanny', 'Marco Bozzaris' and 'Young America' and was renowned for his fluent and polished style.

John Cleland was a British author. He was born in 1709 and died in 1789. He wrote 'Fanny Hill - Memoirs of a woman of pleasure' to repay debts he owed in London. The book was reprinted in 1963 and the publishers prosecuted.

FANNY BARTON

Fanny Barton (Frances Barton) was an Englisg actress. She was born in 1737 and died in 1815. Originally a flower seller and street singer, she was discovered by a French milliner who gave her some lessons and after which she became a theatre performer, making her debut in 1755 at the Haymarket in the role of 'Miranda' in the play 'The Busybody'. She later married and became Frances Abington.

Mary Anne Stirling (also known as Fanny Stirling) was an English comedy actress. She was born in 1815 at London and died in 1895. She first appeared on stage in 1827 under the name 'Fanny Clifton'. After touring the provinces with her husband, Edward Stirling, she appeared at the Adelphi Theatre, London, in 1836. Six years later she joined Macready at Drury Lane, and made a success as 'Celia' in 'As You Like it'. In 1852 she made her greatest hit as 'Peg Woffington' in 'Masks and Faces'. She retired from acting in 1885.
