BAHRAIN

Bahrain is a country composed of a group of 33 islands in the Arabian gulf. It has a total area of 620 km2. The climate is arid; mild, pleasant winters; very hot, humid summers. The terrain is mostly low desert plain rising gently to low central escarpment. Natural resources are oil, associated and non-associated natural gas and fish. The religion is Muslim (70% Shia, 30% Sunni) The official language is Arabic with English also widely spoken and Farsi and Urdu also spoken. During the 17th century Bahrain was ruled by Persia, and during the 19th century became a British protectorate. Britain ended its protectorate in 1968 and
Bahrain joined Qatar and the then Trucial States (now the United Arab Emirates) to form the Federation of Arab Emirates, only to leave in 1971 to become an independent state.

IRAN

The Islamic Republic of Iran (formerly known as Persia until 1935)is a country in south west Asia. It has a total area of 1,648,000 km2. The climate is mostly arid or semiarid, subtropical along the Caspian coast. The terrain is comprised of a rugged, mountainous rim; a high, central basin with deserts and mountains and small, discontinuous plains along both coasts. Natural resources are petroleum, natural gas, coal, chromium, copper, iron ore, lead, manganese, zinc, sulphur. The religion is 95% Shia Muslim, 4% Sunni Muslim, 2% Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Bahai. The language is 58% Farsi (Persian), 26% Turkic and Turkic dialects, 9% Kurdish, 2% Luri, 1% Baloch, 1% Arabic, 1% Turkish,and 2% other. Iran underwent a revolution in 1979 during which the shah or king was overthrown by Shi'ites led by Ayatollah Khomeini who declared Iran an Islamic republic.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The United Arab Emirates (formerly the Trucial States) is a country in Arabia comprised of a federation of independent states. It has a total area of 83, 600 km2. The climate is desert; cooler in the eastern mountains. The terrain is comprised of a flat, barren coastal plain merging into rolling sand dunes of vast desert wasteland and mountains in the east. Natural resources are crude oil and natural gas. The religion is 96% Muslim of which 16% are Shia; 4% Christian, Hindu, and other. The official language is Arabic with Farsi and English widely spoken in the major cities and Hindi and Urdu also spoken. The Trucial States were a British protectorate from the 19th century until independence in 1971 when they changed their name to the United Arabe Emirates.
