The English Electric P 1 Lightning (later BAC Lightning and later BA Lightning) was a British single-seater all-weather interceptor aircraft developed during the 1950s, and first flown in 1954 and in service until 1974 when they started to be replaced by McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantoms. It was powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon 302 augmented turbojets providing a top speed of 1500 mph and was armed with two Red Top or Firestreak guided missiles or two 30 mm Aden cannons on two under-wing hard points.

FIRESTREAK

The De Havilland Firestreak (officially code-named Blue Jay) was a British air-to-air guided missile designed to be fired from behind the target (known as a pursuit course). The Firestreak used passive infra-red homing and was designed for the destruction of high-speed bomber aircraft at high altitudes. Firestreak was the standard armament on Sea Vixen and BAC Lightning aircraft during the 1960's. Firestreak had a cruising speed in excess of Mach 2 and a range of 8 km.

GLOSTER JAVELIN

The Gloster GA5 Javelin was a British two-seater all-weather fighter aircraft in service with the RAF from 1956 to 1968. The Gloster Javelin was a mid-wing monoplane of Delta configuration powered by two Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire 203 turbojets providing a top speed of 1130 kmh and a range of 1530 km. Armaments varied with the model, the first models had four 30 mm Aden guns mounted two in each wing, later models had two 30 mm cannons, one mounted in each wing and the capacity to carry four Firestreak air-to-air missiles carried on four under-wing hard points. The Gloster Javelin was the last production aircraft produced by the Gloster company.

HAWKER SIDDELEY SEA VIXEN

The Hawker Siddeley Sea Vixen (formerly the De Havilland DH 110 Sea Vixen) was a British two-seater fighter-bomber aircraft first flown in 1951, entering service with the Royal Navy in 1960 before being phased at the end of 1968. The Hawker Siddeley Sea Vixen was a mid-wing cantilever monoplane of metal construction powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon 208 turbojets providing a top speed of 1050 kmh and a range of 965 km. Armaments consisted of four Firestreak or later Red Top air-to-air missiles, 2000 lbs of bombs or other combinations of disposable stores.

RED TOP

Red Top was a British air-to-air guided missile developed as a successor to the Firestreak, and first known as the Firestreak Mk IV. Red Top had a cruising speed in excess of Mach 3 and a range of 11 km. Unlike Firestreak, Red Top had the advantage that it could be fired from any direction, including a collision course with the target.
