Arizona is a state in USA. The territory of Arizona was organised in 1863 partly from territory ceded by Mexico to the USA by the 1848 treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and partly from the 1853 Gadsden purchase. Arizona was admitted to the Union in 1912.
The surface of Arizona is generally mountainous, but many fertile and well-watered valleys lie between the ridges. Part of the surface consists of deserts often entirely destitute of vegetation. The territory belongs to the basin of the Colorado, which passes through a portion of it, besides forming the boundary; while the Gila and Little Colorado, tributaries of the Colorado, traverse it from east to west. The canyons of the Colorado form a wonderful feature, the river flowing for hundreds of miles in a deep rocky channel with walls rising perpendicularly to the height of 500 to 1828 meters. In some parts timber is plentiful. The rainfall is small, and irrigation has been employed for agricultural purposes. Large tracts of elevated land have been found excellently adapted as pastures for sheep and cattle. The territory is rich in gold, silver, and other minerals, and mining is largely carried on, much silver and gold being now obtained.
Gretna is a village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The village is famed as an elopement destination ('Gretna Green') from the 18th century which resulted from differences in Scots and English law - To conclude a lawful (though irregular) marriage in Scotland, it was only necessary for an umniirried couple to go and declare themselves man and wife before witnesses, and it was in this way that these runaway couples were married; but such marriages were put an end to in 1856, by an act declaring that no irregular marriage in Scotland shall be valid unless one of the parties has resided in Scotland for twenty-one days next preceding such marriage. The weddings traditionally took place in the old Blacksmith's Shop on Gretna Green.

The United Mexican States or Mexico is a country in Central America with a total area of 1,972,550 km2. It was conquered by the Aztecs who founded the city of Mexico in 1325, and the country was discovered in 1517 and conquered by the Spanish under Fernando Cortez. The Mexicans started their struggle for independence in 1810, realising their goal in 1821. The climate varies from tropical to desert and the terrain is high, rugged mountains, low coastal plains, high plateaus, and desert. Natural resources are crude oil, silver, copper, gold, lead, zinc, natural gas and timber. The religion is 97% nominally Roman Catholic and 3% Protestant, the language is Spanish with Nahuati also spoken.
The independence of Mexico was recognized by the United States in March, 1823. A treaty of limits was signed in 1828, with additional articles in 1831 and 1835 and a commercial treaty in 1831. The Mexican War of 1846 was caused by Mexico's resentment over the annexation of their territory of Texas by the United States. After a succession of victories the United States obtained in February, 1848, the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, by which Mexico was forced to cedeCalifornia, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico to the United States in consideration of a payment of $15,000,000 by the United States and the assumption of $3,000,000 of unsettled claims against Mexico which were paid by the US Government in 1851.
By the Gadsden Treaty of 1853 a half million of square miles of territory were added to the United States, and rights of transit over the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. In 1861 an extradition treaty was concluded, and in 1868 a naturalization convention and a convention for the establishment of a claims commission. Claims against Mexico were finally allowed to the amount of about $4,000,000, and against the United States to the amount of about $150,000. A reciprocity convention was concluded in 1883, but is not in operation owing to a failure of the necessary legislation. The boundary between Mexico and the United States was fixed by the Convention of. 1884.
