John Raphael Smith was an English mezzotint engraver. He was born in 1752 at Derby and died in 1812. Trained for the drapery trade, in 1769 he became an engraver. He was closely associated with George Morland, and engraved hundreds of plates after Reynolds, Gainsborough and others.

Thomas Gainsborough was an English painter. He was born in 1727 at Sudbury and died in 1788. He was trained under the engraver Gravelot and the painter Hayman, but met with small success until his marriage with Miss Burr, a lady of beauty and fortune, in 1746. After residing for some time in Ipswich and Bath, he went to London in 1774, where he passed the rest of his life. He was one of the original thirty-six academicians. He rivalled Sir Joshua Reynolds as a portrait-painter, and showed no less originality in landscape. His are very highly esteemed.
