RUNNING THE GAUNTLET

Running the gauntlet was a British naval punishment metered out to those convicted of theft. It involved the perpetrator being required to pass between two lines of the ships crew each of which was armed with a stick or lump of rope with which they struck the passing thief. Running the gauntlet was abolished as a punishment in 1806.

SA-N-9

The SA-N-9 (Klinok) Gauntlet or Kynshal is a Russian ship borne air-defence missile system. The system comprises a ship borne computer control suite and an under-deck launcher with four drum-type launch modules each with eight missiles (total 32 missiles). The range is from 12 to 15 kilometres, and the target altitude is from 10 to 6,000 metres. The missile which is armed with a 15 kg warhead can engage targets up to a maximum target speed of 700 metres per second, engaging 4 targets simultaneously.

ANTELOPE

HMS Antelope was a British Achates Class destroyer of 1360 tons displacement built under the 1928 War Programme which saw action during the Second World War, and in February 1940 sank the German submarine U41 in the South West Approaches, the first to be sunk underwater by a single destroyer; on the 31st of October 1940 she sank the German submarine U-31 off north-west Ireland. In 1941 she took part in Operation Gauntlet; in 1946 she was sold and broken up. She was armed with four 4.7-inch guns; six smaller guns and eight 21-inch torpedo tubes. She was powered by three Admiralty 3-drum type boilers with super heaters providing a top speed of 35 knots and carried a complement of 138.

ANTHONY

HMS Anthony was a British Achates Class destroyer of 1360 tons displacement built under the 1928 War Programme which saw action during the Second World War, assisting in the Dunkirk evacuation during April and May 1940, bringing 3000 troops back to Britain during which she was damaged by a bomb near miss on the 28th of May and was repaired at Portsmouth. She took part in Operation Gauntlet in August 1941, and Operation Husky in 1943. She was sold in 1947 and broken up in 1948. She was armed with four 4.7-inch guns; six smaller guns and eight 21-inch torpedo tubes. She was powered by three Admiralty 3-drum type boilers with super heaters providing a top speed of 35 knots and carried a complement of 138.
