The Goat Moth (Cossus cossus) is a large moth of the family Cossidae with a wing span of between 65 and 80 mm found in northern Africa, Europe and temperate Asia flying from June to July at night in deciduous forests. The larvae, which are about seven centimeters in length, hollow out galleries in the wood of trees, which they first soften by a juice of a strong smell which they secrete. With the saw-dust made in the operation they form cocoons, in which the chrysalids are developed. The larval condition lasts for three years. The fully-developed insect is ash-coloured, with numerous small black lines on the first pair of wings. Research Goat Moth
