THOMAS HOLLOWAY

Thomas Holloway was an English pharmacist. He was born in 1800 and died in 1883. A proprietor of the popular pills, ointment, etc, he founded a sanatorium or asylum for the 'insane', and hospitals for incurables and convalescents, at Egham, Surrey, in 1873; and also at the same place the Royal Holloway College, designed to supply the best and most suitable education for women of the middle classes. The college, which was opened queen Victoria in 1886, contained a collection of pictures of the value of 100,000 pounds. The total cost of the two institutions was about a million pounds sterling.
