The 1st Alabama Cavalry regiment was formed in 1862 in Huntsville and Memphis and mustered into Federal service that December in Corinth, Mississippi. Company officers were chosen from among the men and Captain George E. Spencer was later named Colonel and given overall command. The '1st' was one of six Union regiments from Alabama, the only cavalry unit, and its ranks contained both whites and blacks.
