She is armed with 40 GDC Pomona Standard SM-1MR surface-to-air missiles, two FMC 5 inch/54 Mk 42 Mod 10 automatic guns, four 12.7 mm machine-guns, six 324 mm Mk 32 Mod 5 (in two triple arrangement) torpedo tubes, taking the Honeywell Mark-46 torpedo. She carries a crew of twenty officers and 309 other ranks. The Brisbane is generally similar to ships of the US Charles F Adams Class, but differs by the addition of a broad deckhouse between the funnels enclosing the Ikara anti-submarine torpedo-carrying missile system.

Ikara is an Australian long-range anti-submarine weapons system, first deployed in the Australian Type 82 guided missile destroyers during the late 1960's. Ikara is a guided rocket carrying an American Type 44 lightweight homing torpedo which is parachuted into the sea near the target when ordered to be released by command from the controlling ship.
