Picture of Ilmenite

Ilmenite or titaniferous iron oxide is an iron-black or steel-grey coloured common rock-forming mineral which is chiefly found in small crystals in basic igneous rocks and schists, consisting chiefly of the oxides of iron and titanium. It has weak magnetism and a relative hardness of six. It is the major ore of titanium. It is also known as menaccanite after Menaccan, in Cornwall, where it was first found.

LEPIDOCROCITE

Picture of Lepidocrocite

Lepidocrocite is a secondary mineral that is generally found in association with goethite and other iron-bearing minerals, especially hematite, ilmenite, limonite, magnetite, pyrite and siderite. Lepidocrocite is very similar to goethite, the two having the same chemical formula but differing in specific gravity - due to the different manner in which they formed - lepidocrocite being heavier.
