INGUSHETIA

Ingushetia is a Russian autonomous republic on the northern slopes of the Caucasus mountains. The land of Ingushetia became part of the Russian Empire in 1810 and in 1924 became an autonomous republic of the USSR, before in 1936 being merged with Chechnya to form the Autonomous Republic of Checheno-Ingush. This republic was dissolved 1944 before being reconstituted in 1957. In 1992, following border clashes with the Chechens, Ingushetia was made a separate autonomous republic.
