In architecture a jack rafter is one of the shorter rafters used in constructing a hip or valleyroof; in the United States, the term applies to any secondary roof timber, like the common rafters resting on purlins in a trussed roof; and also, one of the pieces simulating extended rafters, used under the eaves in some styles of building.
