Allosaurus was the biggest and fiercest carnivorous dinosaur of the Jurassic period. It was 15m tall, about 12 m long and weighed about three tons. Remains of Allosaurus were first discovered in Colorado in 1869 and then in 1877 more were discovered by Dr O C Marsh.

APATOSAURUS

Picture of Apatosaurus

Apatosaurus - also known as Brontosaurus - was a huge, plant-eating dinosaur, of the suborder Sauropoda, that lived in the Late Jurassic period, more than 140 million years ago. The name Brontosaur comes from the Greek bronte, 'thunder' and sauros, 'lizard', and implies that the animal shook the ground when it walked. It was about 21 metres long and weighed up to 30 metric tons. Its body was relatively short and thick, the neck long and slender, the tail large and strong, and the four limbs massive and of nearly equal length. The first brontosaurus skeleton was discovered in 1879 in Colorado by the American palaeontologist Othniel Charles Marsh. It lacked a skull, so Marsh gave it a blunt, small skull found nearby. Scientists confirmed in 1979 that the skull was that of another sauropod, Camarasaurus. The Apatosaurus true skull was found to have a longer snout and longer, finer teeth.

BARAPASAURUS

Barapasaurus was a dinosaur of the Jurassic period. Remains of Barapasaurus were found in India in 1975. The remains suggest a herbivore that was about 18 metres long, had a large, heavy body, thick legs, a long neck and tail and walked on four legs.

BAROSAURUS

Barosaurus was a dinosaur of the Jurassic period. Remains of Barosaurus were first discovered in 1890, and have been found in both the western USA and in Tanzania in rocks of the same age - indicating a continual land-mass between the two places in the Jurassic period. Barosaurus was a herbivore, with a big heavy body, about 25 metres long, thick legs and a long neck and tail.

It was a herbivore with a large, heavy body, thick legs and a long neck and tail and walked on four legs, the fore-legs being longer than the hind legs forming a high base at the shoulder for its long neck.

Camarasaurus was a dinosaur of the Jurassic period. Remains of Camarasaurus were discovered in 1877 and named by E D Cope. It was about 18 metres long, with a large heavy body, thick legs and a long neck and tail similar to Apatosaurus, but with a shorter neck and tail. The mouth was furnished with long, blunt teeth which pointed forwards and indicate a herbivore.

CAMPTOSAURUS

Picture of Camptosaurus

Camptosaurus was a herbivore dinosaur from the Jurassic period. A heavily built dinosaur, it was about 7 metres long and similar to Iguanodon. It mainly stayed on all-fours, but could rear up on its hind legs to run away from predators. It had small hooves instead of claws on its fingers, and rows of hundreds of teeth in its mouth. Remains of roughly ten species of Camptosaurus of varying sizes and proportions have been discovered in different parts of the USA and Europe since 1885.

CERATOSAURUS

Ceratosaurus was a carnivorous dinosaur of the Jurassic period. Remains of
Ceratosaurus were first found in the same quarry where remains of Allosaurus were discovered, in the USA in 1884. Ceratosaurus was about 6 metres long, walked on its hind legs, had massive sharp fangs and a horn on its nose. Smaller than Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus had a relatively larger jaws and four fingers to each hand.
