Klaus Barbie (the 'Butcher of Lyons') was a German Gestapo officer. He was born in 1914 and died in 1991. After the Second World War he and his family were provided with new identites and $5000 by the US government, and helped to leave France and went to La Paz in Bolivia where Barbie established himself as a businessman. In 1987, having been tracked down by NAZI hunters he was expelled from Bolivia, returned to France and tried and sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes (the murder and torture of civilians) he committed while he was responsible for the German occupation of the city of Lyons during the Second World War. Sucre is a town and the legal capital of Bolivia. The town was founded in 1539 as 'La Plata', called Chuquisaca by the Bolivians, by the conquistador Pedro de Anzurez on the site of an existing Indian village. Sucre became the capital of Bolivia in 1839 and in 1840 was renamed 'Sucre' in honour of Antonio Jose de Sucre. In 1898 the capital of Bolivia was moved to La Paz, resulting in a civil war. A compromise was reached with both towns sharing capital status: Sucre remaining capital but the executive and legislature (the seat of government) moved to La Paz. Research Sucre
