ACHILLES II

HMS Achilles was a British light cruiser of 7030 tons displacement of the Leander Class launched in 1932, that saw action during the Second World War. She was armed with eight 6-inch guns, four 4-inch anti-aircraft guns, four 3-pounder anti-aircraft guns, ten smaller guns and eight 21 inch torpedo tubes arranged in two quadruples. She was powered by four Admiralty 3-drum type oil boilers providing a top speed of 32.5 knots. She carried a crew of 550 and one aircraft.

ACHILLES III

HMS Achilles was a British Leander Class frigate of 2500 tons displacement built by Yarrow and launched in 1968. HMS Achilles was powered by two oil-fired boilers providing a top speed of 27 knots and a range of 6400 km at 15 knots. She carried a complement of 260 and was armed with one quad Seacat missile launcher; twin 4.5 inch guns and two 20 mm anti-aircraft guns and a Limbo anti-submarine mortar. She carried a Wasp helicopter. During 1974 and 1975 she was part of the 3rd Frigate Squadron and assisted in the evacuation of British Citizens from Vietnam. In 1975 she collided with the Greek tanker Olympic Alliance in the Dover Strait. She was decommissioned in 1990 and sold to Chile as the Ministro Zenteno.

She served in the Falklands War of 1982, acting as a close escort to HMS Invincible, and in 1983 removed Mauritian revolutionaries from an island in the Indian Ocean area of Diego Garcia before being sold to India for operational use in 1995.
