BARTOLOMEO AMMANATI

Bartolomeo Ammanati was an Italian sculptor and architect. He was born in 1511 at Florence and died in 1589. He executed the Leda at Florence, a gigantic Neptune for St Mark's Place at Venice, a colossal Hercules at Padua, and built the celebrated Trinity Bridge at Florence.

Castor was the twin brother of Polydeuces. He was a son of Zeus and Leda. He, like his brother was born from an egg after Zeus visited Leda disguised as a swan.

HELEN

In Greek mythology, Helen or Helena was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, and the most beautiful of women. By advice of Ulysses her numerous suitors were bound by oath to respect her choice of a husband, and to maintain it even by arms. She chose to marry Menelaus, King of Sparta, but during his absence, was abducted by Paris, Prince of Troy. This precipitated the Trojan War. Afterwards she returned to Sparta with her husband. After the death of Paris she married his brother Deiphobus. On the fall of Troy she returned to Sparta with Menelaus, but at his death was driven from the country, and was murdered at Rhodes by the queen of the island.

Leda was a daughter of Thestius. She was the wife of Tyndareus. She was seduced by Zeus and gave birth to two eggs. From one hatched her daughter Helen and son Polydeuces, and from the other hatched Castor.

LEDA II

HMS Leda was a British Halcyon Class fleet minesweeper of 815 tons displacement of the Second World War launched in 1936 and sunk during the Second World War. HMS Leda was powered by two sets of 3-cylinder compound engines providing a top speed of 17 knots. She carried a complement of 80 and was armed with two 4-inch anti-aircraft guns and five smaller guns.
