Peltasts were a kind of light infantry employed by the ancient Greeks. They were so named after the pelta which they bore. They also wore quilted tunics and leather leggings and carried long spears and swords.

Galligaskins or gallygaskins were loose wide breeches worn by men in the 17th century. Later the term was applied to leather leggings worn in the 19th century.

Gramashes were gaiters reaching to the knees, a type of leggings made of thick, heavy cloth.

Leggings are elasticised, body-hugging trousers or footles tights, generally made in knitted jersey to provide some stretch, and either plain or printed with a pattern. Leggings are frequently worn by women during colder weather as an alternative to tights, with a skirt over the top to preserve some modesty.
